Penny Legg

Writer, Editor, Photographer and Tutor
23rd September 2009

I was delighted to win the Scroll Award for Best Writing in 2008/9 in
a competition organised by the Southampton Writers' Circle.

September 2009

I have been asked to Chair a Panel Discussion at the Bournemouth
Literary Festival entitled ' Getting Into Print, Conventional Versus
Alternative Routes'.

I have been invited to The Writers Bureau Annual Tutor's Conference
in Manchester in October.

I have been busy researching and writing the various books I have
been commissioned to write.

I am looking forward to speaking at the SWWJ Regional Meeting in
Dorchester on 24th September.

August 2009

I have just heard that I am to be featured in
Writers' News magazine
in November.

I have also just heard that I have been offered the contract to
produce a fourth book,
Southampton Past and Present for The
History Press.  This will be a book of archive photographs of the city,
with their modern day versions in colour, which I will photograph.  I
am looking forward to working on this book, which will be out at the
end of 2010.

I have also been offered a tutoring position with the
Writers Bureau.
Many moons ago I took a non-fiction course with this company, which
I thoroughly recommend for anyone who feels they have it in them to
try writing professionally.  I look forward to beginning work with them
in the near future.

I will shortly be visiting Cornwall for articles in that rugged part of the
country.  I grew up visiting the West Country as a child and have not
been there for many years now.  I am looking forward to renewing
my acquaintance with the area in September.

In a week of good news, I also heard that I had passed my latest
Open University course. Those of you who read my blog, and who
have read my
Interesting Info page on this site, will know that I am a
knowledge junkie and will be studying until I am 90 at least!  I am
pleased to report that I earned a good pass for my creative writing
course with the university.

July 2009 - I am now launching my new venture, my
Writing
Consultancy, which seeks to assist those with problems with
grammar and spelling, layout and presentation of short stories,
articles, letters and essays.  In addition, I now offer a one to one
telephone tutorial on how to research the right market for your
writing.  Aimed at the beginner writer, the student and the self
employed, this service is a very useful tool for those in need of a little
help when they put fingers to keyboard.

June 2009 - Recently I have been busy launching
Writing Buddies at
the Southampton branch of Borders book shop.  For both aspiring
and professional writers, Writing Buddies meet every other Friday for
writing related chat.  It is not a book club or writers' circle.  Instead it
offers those interested in writing the chance to meet and discuss
anything writing related.  Recent topics have been the loneliness of
writing, the sad demise of the semi-colon, works in progress and
advice sought on a variety of subjects.  See the Writing Buddies page
on this website for more information.

I was in Swanage at the end of May and in Weymouth in June,
covering the Veterans events there.  The sun shone, so I got
sunburnt.  This seems to be an occupational hazard!

I have just signed contracts for a further two books for The History
Press.
Haunted Southampton will come out in February 2011 and
Winchester: History You Can See will be published in May 2011.  I
am very happy to be working on these two titles, in addition to
Folklore of Hampshire, due out in June 2010.

April saw the publication of my second edition of
The Woman Writer,
my holidaying at home article in
Hampshire Life and my interview
with the Master of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship, RFA Wave Ruler, in
Ships Monthly.  I attended two meetings of the Southampton Writers
Circle, where I met a rich mixture of diverse talents and was
privileged to hear American Novelist,
Tony Hays, speak.  At the end
of the month Flair for Words celebrated its 21st birthday and had a
party at the Heritage Hotel in Bournemouth.  The guest speaker was
Dagger Award winning author, Peter Lovesey. I was happy that
folksinger,
Sarah Morgan, had time for an interview as part of my
continuing research for my book,
Folklore of Hampshire.

May is shaping up to be a busy month.   I am attending the Rejoice!
Flower Festival at Westminster Abbey (7th - 9th May). The National
Association of Flower Arranging Societies (NAFAS) is 50 years old in
2009, and this is one of the many events being staged to celebrate.  I
am speaking at the Dorset/Wilts/Hants Regional Meeting of the
Society of Women Writers and Journalists (SWWJ) on Thursday 14th
May.  I will be talking about using photography to illustrate articles
and showing, hopefully, that it is not as difficult as it looks!  I will be
at the Winchester MayFest (15th -16th May) as part of my ongoing
book research and will meet up with Sarah Morgan again, this time
with the Winchester Community Choir and the other members of the
Axford Five: Moira Craig, Carolyn Robson and the Askew Sisters.  I
will be at the University of Bedford on 23rd May as an Ambassador
for the SWWJ and on the weekend of 24th - 25th May I will be in
Eastleigh talking to people at the 100th anniversary of the Eastleigh
Railway Works.  Finally, at the very end of the month I will be in
Swanage, Dorset, covering the Veterans Day events there.

Well, March is here and spring is in the air.  I am researching my
book,
Folklore of Hampshire (available here for pre-order) and have
worked on articles for
Ships Monthly and Hampshire Life (both due
out in April), attended the Society of Women Writers and Journalists'
Regional Meeting in Chichester, where I met the delightful Iain
Pattison (see my blog for more details of this meeting) and edited my
second edition of The Woman Writer, due out in April.  I am currently
working on some biographical writing and a book review.

February 2009 already!

So far this year has brought a trip to the
Torrevieja Writers Circle,
where I was well received as a Speaker at their weekly meeting.  I
was pleased to see
Freda Lightfoot too.  This prolific novelist had
made the two hour each way trip to hear me speak. I was very
pleased to meet her.

My article, on the Eling Tide Mill, for
The Lady is out today.

The first edition of
The Woman Writer hit the stands at the end of
January and has been extremely well received.  I am pleased!

My interview of Morton Patterson, the keynote speaker at the
Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry AGM, was published in
The Anguillian on 23 January 2009.  Read it
here.

Happy New Year!

I am happy to be able to report that I have just signed a book
contract with
The History Press to write a local history book on
folklore in Hampshire.  It will be published in June 2010.

I am working on the Anguilla Chamber of Commerce and Industry's
Annual General Meeting Programme and End of Year Report.

My first edition, as Editor, of
The Woman Writer, the magazine of the
Society of Women Writers and Journalists is published at the end of
January 2009. Please
contact me if you would like to read a copy.

I have been invited to speak at the
Torrevieja Writers Circle, near
Alicante, Spain.  More about this soon!

I have just had an article accepted for
The Lady magazine.

On location whilst reporting on the Anguilla
Regatta, May 2008.  Yes, I got very sunburnt!

The photo is of a
windswept and sunburnt

Boat (note the dictaphone
about my neck!). See my
blog for more about this.
I have not been interviewed
since I lived in Dhaka and a
reporter for the Daily Star
sent me a sheet of questions
to answer when I was
directing 'The Importance of
Being Earnest,' for Dhaka
Stage, the only English
language theatre group in
Bangladesh.  The resulting
interview is part me and part
editor!  I noticed that it is still
available on the web version
of the newspaper, so if you
fancy a read, here is the link:
Can you guess where I stop
speaking and the editor takes
over?!
